Winchester Deer Season XP .308 Winchester 150 Grain Extreme Point (X308DS) is a purpose-built hunting cartridge developed specifically around the needs of deer hunters. Part of Winchester’s Deer Season XP line, this load combines the widely used .308 Winchester cartridge with a 150-grain Extreme Point polymer-tipped projectile engineered for rapid expansion and substantial energy transfer. Packaged in a 20-round box, X308DS is intended primarily for hunting whitetail, mule deer, and other thin-skinned game where dependable expansion and accuracy are important.
The defining feature of this ammunition is Winchester’s 150-grain Extreme Point (XP) bullet. Unlike a conventional soft point, the Extreme Point incorporates an unusually large-diameter polymer tip. Winchester designed the oversized tip to provide a larger initial impact diameter, helping initiate rapid expansion when the projectile encounters game. Beneath the polymer tip is a lead-core, jacketed bullet designed to combine expansion with adequate penetration. Winchester introduced Deer Season XP specifically as deer-hunting ammunition, with the Extreme Point projectile serving as the centerpiece of the design.
For the X308DS 150-grain .308 Winchester load, published specifications list a muzzle velocity of 2,820 feet per second. At that velocity, the 150-grain projectile generates approximately 2,649 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. This gives the cartridge the combination of velocity and energy traditionally associated with the .308 Winchester while maintaining a relatively flat trajectory at common hunting distances. Winchester’s original Deer Season XP specifications also identify the .308 Winchester 150-grain load at 2,820 fps.
The .308 Winchester itself has been one of America’s most popular centerfire rifle cartridges since its commercial introduction in the early 1950s. Its relatively compact case, manageable recoil, excellent accuracy potential, and broad selection of rifles have made it a mainstay for both hunting and target shooting. The 150-grain bullet weight is particularly well established for deer hunting, offering a useful balance between velocity and projectile mass.
Deer Season XP differs from general-purpose .308 ammunition primarily in its projectile construction. A conventional FMJ is designed mainly for reliable feeding and target shooting, while the Extreme Point is specifically engineered to expand after impact. The polymer tip also creates a streamlined nose profile that contributes to aerodynamic performance while protecting the expansion cavity during normal handling.
The X308DS should not be confused with X308DS2, Winchester’s newer 168-grain Deer Season XP offering. Winchester introduced that heavier load as part of its expanded “heavy for caliber” lineup; the original X308DS remains the 150-grain configuration.
